CAN THE UNITED STATES BE A FREE COUNTRY? PRESENT RISKS AND FUTURE CHALLENGES
Today in the United States as well as in Europe, we spend the present defending what is at risk, and the future appears chiefly as a threat. Yet the very idea of freedom, once central in democratic societies, depends upon a vision of the future. In this lecture Professor Snyder will address the deep threats to freedom, and the possibilities for a future with greater freedom.
Timothy Snyder, Levin Professor of History at Yale and a Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences, Vienna, will explore and explain his latest research about current risks and perils in democratic societies, and possible solutions. An expert on European history, Professor Snyder is a leading American historian and public intellectual. Author of several award winning and bestselling books, his works have all been translated, with his recent On Tyranny now appearing in 40 languages. On Tyranny has been on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list for 57 weeks and is again at number one this week. Snyder's 2018 book The Road to Unfreedom: Russia - Europe - America is at number 10.
