Appetizer—China: Building Good Relationships (instructor: Yuxiang LIU) The Appetizer is a topic of immediate relevance.
Find out what to do (and what not to do) when interacting with Chinese friends, clients, and business partners. In addition to learning social customs, participants will come away with key Chinese phrases for negotiating travel & interacting with people.
Main Course—Mobster Movies (instructor: Andrea GRONVALL) The Main Course is related to the liberal arts Core Curriculum at the University of Chicago.
Mobsters, with their closed societies but powerful influence, have long fascinated moviegoers. This mini course in critical thinking dives beneath the allure of mobster movies to examine what they reveal about cultural, economic, and political issues.
Dessert—A Culinary History of Pizza (instructor: Bill ST. JOHN) The Dessert Course is a serious look at a fun topic.
What is the origin of “Chicago-style” pizza? Why is it different from pizza in Italy or New York? In addition to tracing the history of pizza, this course will provide tips for making your own and suggest unusually good beers and wines to pair with it.

Speaker Profiles
Yuxiang Liu (Speaker)
Mr. Liu is a lecturer in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. He combines extensive teaching experience with a passion for teaching Chinese at all levels.
Andrea Gronvall (Speaker)
Ms. Gronvall contributes to the Chicago Reader and Time Out Chicago, and websites Movie City News and Stop Smiling. A multiple-Emmy nominee for producing Siskel & Ebert, she holds a BS in film studies from Northwestern University.
Bill St. John (Speaker)
Mr. St. John, a former journalist and television reporter, holds an MA in divinity, an MA in public policy studies, and a PhD in theology from the University of Chicago.
