Event Details

Statistical survey sampling became an accepted scientific method in the 1930's. Today, it is still the cornerstone of measurement for government, business, medicine and political polling. In today's business environment of "better, faster, cheaper", big data is considered as a viable alternative for measurement. This presentation will discuss pros and cons of big data and provide examples of uses in measurement processes. A detailed case study will be discussed to illustrate the opportunities and complexities of real world use of big data and some of the challenges of integration with existing traditional measurement systems.

Frank Piotrowski (Speaker)
Retired, Nielsen

Frank Piotrowski retired in mid-2017, after 38 years at the Nielsen Company. In his last role, Frank was the Global Data Science leader for Nielsen's Buy business. Nielsen reports retail store sales activity in over 100 countries around the world and has consumer panels in 27 countries. In his role, Frank was accountable for the measurement methodology used in all buy products globally, which included sample designs, projection and weighting schemes, data editing and imputation techniques as well as fact calculations used in client reporting.

Prior to his last role, Frank was SVP, for Data Science Analytics. In that role, Frank and his team focused on data integration solutions across media and retail using Nielsen assets as well as third party data sources. Throughout his 38 year career with Nielsen, Frank has held several technical roles that have helped Nielsen grow to an industry leading insights provider.

Frank also represented Nielsen in many industry events and has co-authored several technical papers regarding the data and methodology Nielsen uses. In the academic sector, Frank was the Nielsen lead in a joint research relationship with the University of Chicago.

Frank holds a BS degree in Quantitative Methods from the University of Illinois and a MS degree in Management Science from Northwestern University.
