The University of Chicago Alumni Club invites you to a winter walk around St. James's guided by one of our own alumna.
St James's has been the heart of Royal London since Henry VIII built St James's Palace in the 1530s as a love nest for Anne Boleyn and himself. Developed during the Restoration for the aristocrats and courtiers attached to the Court, the area is today well-known for its smart shopping, restaurants and the Gentlemen's Clubs along Pall Mall. There is more, however, to St James's than wealth and privilege.
Join us for a walk along its famous thoroughfares and discover Dr Graham's Celestial Bed and his Temple of (sexual) Health; see the site of the Texas Legation; hear about the coffee house culture that gave rise to the famous clubs; and walk over the underground tunnels where Napoleon III plotted his way to power in the late 1830s.
The tour begins in St James's Square, birthplace of George III, and ends at Fortnum and Mason's, The Queen's Grocers and the perfect destination for a Seasaonl treat.

Those with remaining energy should not miss wandering over to Trafalgar Square to admire the Menorah light display in celebration of Hanukkah.
