Richard E. Friedman (Speaker)
President and Chairman, National Strategy Forum

Richard E. Friedman received his education at the Harvard School for Boys; Grinnell College, where he received an AB in 1951; and at Northwestern School of Law, where he received a JD in 1956. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1953 (Lt.). He practiced law in Chicago, Illinois. From 1964 to 1969, he served as First Assistant Attorney General, State of Illinois and drafted the Illinois Charitable Trust and Charitable Solicitation Acts. Mr. Friedman was co-contributor to the book “The Future of Foundations” (1975). From 1971-76 Mr. Friedman served as the Regional Director (Midwest) for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. He received a Presidential Citation for his work on the IndoChinese Refugee Resettlement Program (1976). Mr. Friedman has also served on special assignment for the U.S. Department of State in Romania, on the U.S. Army Science Board Ballistic Missile Defense Committee, as a consultant to the government of Republic of Georgia for legislation regarding national security and economic matters, and has participated in strategic planning conferences for Central Asian Republics. Mr. Friedman currently serves as President and Chair, National Strategy Forum, Inc.; Counselor, American Bar Association Standing Committee on Law and National Security; and as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs National Security Studies Program.
Frank C. Schell III (Speaker)

Frank Schell serves on the editorial board of the National Strategy Forum, the mission of which is to inform the public on national security issues. He is a member of the Dean's International Council of the Harris School of Public Policy Studies, University of Chicago where he is a guest lecturer on South Asia affairs. Late last year he participated on a fact finding mission to India of the Harris School to meet with leaders of the private and public sectors. Mr. Schell is an independent senior consultant for CRA (formerly Charles River Associates), engaged in enterprise risk management and business strategy. He was a member of the senior management of the First National Bank of Chicago and its successors, specializing in global trade, treasury, and risk management. He was stationed in Sao Paulo, London, and East Africa, and has been involved with financial institutions banking with the Middle East, India, and Pakistan. He was also Assistant Treasurer of an aerospace/defense contractor engaged in project finance and risk management. He was on of the board of directors of the National Foreign Trade Council and the Bankers Association for Finance and Trade. He served in the U.S. Peace Corps in India and speaks Hindi-Urdu. His essays have been published in the Far Eastern Economic Review, Chicago Tribune, National Strategy Forum Review, and American Spectator. He holds an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Stanford University.
Lauren Bean (Speaker)

Lauren Bean is Managing Editor of the National Strategy Forum Review, an online national security journal published by the National Strategy Forum, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to educating the public on issues of national security. She is the principal author and/or editor of various articles, reports, and chapters on U.S. national security strategy, and she recently edited the 2008 (first edition) Careers in National Security Law, published by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Law and National Security. Ms. Bean has also been featured as a panelist in a McCormick Freedom Museum's series on strategic issues, speaking on national security and foreign affairs. She is a graduate of Boston College with a degree in political science.
