Event Details
Over the past 40 years, the incarceration rate in the United States has increased dramatically—a problem that disproportionately affects the most economically disadvantaged and socially vulnerable members of society. There is a movement to reduce pretrial jail detention. However, the high rate at which people released before their trials commit crimes also more severely affects economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, where crime is often concentrated. Jens Ludwig, director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, will talk about how new big data techniques from the field of machine learning, which are already widely used in the private sector, can be repurposed to help address pressing public policy problems like this.
