The word "innovation" has become everyday language, casual language. Not so long ago, the word was reserved not for everyday products, but for life-changing technological advances.

Event Details

In the decades that first brought us such wonders as movies, television, transistors, and information theory, innovation meant technological advancement that addressed immediate market needs with the latest in research and manufacturing capabilities. Could we foster equally meaningful technological advances by returning to that way of thinking?

We'll explore current ideas about innovation and compare them with twentieth century views from great innovation centers such as:

• Bell Laboratories, the research center which created the first synchronized-sound movie equipment, the first long-distance television transmission and the first transistor, among other wonders.
• Edison Laboratories, originator of the phonograph, electric lighting, and thousands of other inventions.
• Corning, creator of telecommunication-grade optical fiber. In the words of the Smithsonian Institution, "The backbone of communications today, fiber carries voice, data, and video around the world, with nearly limitless capacity."

Can the innovation of the 21st century change lives as the innovation of the 20th century did? What can we do to promote invention of new technology that changes lives dramatically, and for the better?

This will be an active discussion event. Let's challenge ourselves to come up with ideas about fostering meaningful innovation for the 21st century, and put those ideas into action.

Cost

$15 will cover the event, hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic drinks
