Event Details

The 100th anniversary of the Rising of 1916, the so-called Easter rebellion against British colonization, and the United Kingdom's referendum in June on exiting the European Union are the backdrop to growing social disaffection and unrest in Ireland despite economic growth and falling unemployment. In a wave of public demonstrations, civic disorder, and standoffs with the police, Irish voters are signaling that they are dissatisfied with the past years of austerity and will no longer accept perceived deprivation, such as a proposed tax on water. How do the developments in Ireland help inform our understanding of populist movements in the United States and in continental Europe? Plan to attend to hear Seamus Power discuss the social and cultural psychology of Irish economic and political thought and why people don't respond to objective economic conditions but instead to their subjective experiences and what they think those experiences mean.
