Moderator -> Everyone Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us today. Our chat will begin promptly at 12:00 p.m. CDT. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now so we can start providing answers at noon.
Moderator -> Everyone Hello everyone. Welcome to our live chat! Thank you for joining us today. We are eager to answer all your questions, so please begin submitting them now.
Katie -> Everyone Hello and welcome to the Live Chat! I'm here to answer questions about Chicago Business Fellows and anything else.
Beth -> Everyone Thanks for joining us today. My name is Beth and I'm the associate director of admissions, operations. Please ask all of your application related questions - I'm here to help!
Kara -> Everyone Greetings from Chicago Booth! Thank you for joining our chat. My name is Kara Northcutt, and I look forward to answering your questions about Booth's Evening MBA and Weekend MBA programs. Keep in mind that our next application deadline for Spring 2013 is January 11th. There is plenty of time to apply!
Gretchen -> Everyone Welcome to the Chicago Booth Live Chat. We are thrilled that you are interested in Chicago Booth. My name is Gretchen Cooper, the director of admissions, and look forward to hearing from you.
Brad -> Kara Hello. I'm interested to know how many weekends per year I would plan to be in Chicago.
Kara -> Brad Brad, I hope all is well! Weekend MBA classes meet every Saturday during the quarter. The fall, winter and spring quarters are 11 weeks and summer quarter is 10 weeks. Therefore, it is safe to plan for 43 weekends per year.
Denise -> Katie If you apply to the Full Time program and are accepted, then later decide that the Part Time program is a better fit, is it possible to switch?
Katie -> Denise Hello Denise: You are not able to transfer between the part-time and full-time programs. For those in the Evening MBA or Weekend MBA you can transfer once between those programs. This is particularly beneficial to students who relocate either to Chicago or out of Chicago.
Ben -> Beth Does the weekend MBA program only start in the fall semester?
Beth -> Ben Yes, Ben, the Weekend program only starts in the Fall quarter. As a reminder, the deadline for the Weekend application is Friday, May 10 and the Fall quarter begins September 26. LAUNCH for the Weekend class is on August 23, 24, & 25. The Weekend application is live and once you submit our office will have a final decision to you within 4-6 weeks.
Zee -> Gretchen What are the strengths of your program? Does it matter to you that I have to travel from the east coast?
Gretchen -> Zee Zee: It is great that you would travel in from the East Coast. Over 86% of our Weekend MBA students travel in from outside of Illinois. The geographical diversity adds to the benefits of the Booth MBA Program. Also, the flexibility of the curriculum and your ability to choose exactly which classes you want to take, in what order and how many classes per quarter is a very attractive aspect of a Booth MBA.
Raj -> Beth I'm applying for the weekend part time program and work at a small company who doesn't really have an HR office. My manager is supportive about my completion of an MBA but im concerned how much of his time ill need to take having him fill out paperwork. if there is no company reimbursement what exactly does my manager need to do?
Beth -> Raj Raj, when applying to the Weekend program, we do not require any company letter of support. So unless your manager is completing a letter of recommendation for your application, there will be nothing he will be required to submit.
Krishna -> Gretchen 1) Are weekend MBA students allowed to do recruiting in second year with FT students?
Gretchen -> Krishna Krishna, yes, our Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students are certainly able to participate in On Campus Recruiting for full time jobs after you have taken twelve classes. You would be going through recruiting with our Full Time students.
Ajoe -> Beth Hi, Beth. I don't remember submitting my original transcripts with my applicaiton.
Beth -> Ajoe Ajoe, we're thrilled you'll be joining us! We will you to submit your official transcripts to our office. You should have received an email from my colleague Susan Thoma today. You will also need to submit your enrollment form and deposit. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Susan or myself.
Brad -> Kara Are there particular industries which target Booth students? If so, what would the strongest job opportunities come from? I'm interested in trying something new after having done CPG, Retail and Logistics
Kara -> Brad Brad, a very wide variety of industries recruit students and alumni from Booth including consulting, all financial services, healthcare, CPG, and start-ups just to name a few. You gain access to Career Services as soon as you start the program, and it is a lifelong service. Depending on what industry you are interested in getting into, you will tailor your approach to career services. For example, if you are interested in CPG, you can sign up to receive email notifications from our job posting database when positions in that industry are posted.
Chon -> Beth Can evening MBA students take weekend MBA classes?
Beth -> Chon Chon- great question. Yes, Evening MBA students can take Weekend classes, whatever timing works best with your schedule. As a reminder, Weekend classes meet every Saturday from 9am-noon and/or 1:30-4:30pm.
odionokojie -> Katie I am thinking of attending chicago booth part time in the Spring. But I work all the way out in New York...is there any way I can take some classes online or so I have to be in Chicago every weekend??
Katie -> odionokojie Hello odionokojie: It sounds like the Weekend MBA might be a better fit for you. Over 80% of Weekend students are living and working outside Illinois. Classes meet every Saturday. We provide free shuttles from the two Chicago airports to make the commute easier. The Weekend MBA starts in the Autumn quarter only (deadline: May 10th). We do not offer online classes.
Raj_Vonguru -> Gretchen Can you please talk about campus recruiting and how is it different when compared to the full-time MBA
Gretchen -> Raj_Vonguru Raj_Vonrguru: The similarities are what are important. The same companies recruit Full Time MBA and Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students. Firms recruit Booth talent through a number of mediums – On Campus Recruiting, job postings, resume referrals etc.
Raj_Vonguru -> Kara How do we reach out to Booth Alumni or the current students?
Kara -> Raj_Vonguru Raj, the best way is to reach out to me directly and let me know some characteristics of alumni or students you'd like to connect with. I will then have someone reach out to you. My email address is Kara.Northcutt@chicagobooth.edu.
Katie -> Everyone Here's a look at our admissions deadlines.
Raj -> Katie What is the shortest amount of time I can finish the weekend program in?
Katie -> Raj Hi Raj: The Chicago Booth MBA includes 20 courses plus Effective Leadership. If you take 2 courses per quarter, you will complete the program in 2.5 years.
Roman -> Gretchen Hey all, Im currently a Day Trader in the Chicago area, so the evening MBA program really appeals to me. My question is more philosophical I guess...is it still worth the time/effort/money to persue and MBA if I don't really want to make a career change but want the experience and credentials that comes with a Booth MBA
Gretchen -> Roman Roman, yes. Full time working professionals pursue a Chicago Booth MBA to change careers, enhance and accelerate careers and to build skills and experiences. We have a number of traders at Chicago Booth. You may be interested in our Chicago Booth Trading Group: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups
Beck -> Katie What is the average class size for the Weekend MBA program?
Katie -> Beck Hi Beck: The Weekend MBA class is usually between 100 and 120 students.
VB -> Kara What specific skills can one expect to master with your program?
Kara -> VB VB, in general alumni tell us that they greatly enhance their critical thinking, leadership, and management skills. In addition, alumni always mention that they become more confident as a result of the program. Students also gain industry specific skills based on the concentrations they pursue.
n/a -> Beth If I am a non-US citizen but live and work in the US on H1-B visa, am I considered an international applicant? I ask because some sections of the application form require information from "International Applicants only"
Beth -> n/a Good question. If you are on a H1-B visa, the only section you would need to additionally answer would be your permanent address. Other than that, please complete all other fields in the application.
Chon -> Beth Thanks, Beth. I heard that students are ranked in some ways to register for classes. How does that work? Also what's the average GMAT score for the Evening MBA program this year?
Beth -> Chon Chon - all students bid on classes at the same time, so there is no preference or ranking given. The average GMAT score for the Evening program is 680 but 80% of our incoming students have a GMAT score between 620 to 750.
Dan -> Kara Hi, from reading previous chats and FAQs I know the makeup of the summer and fall evening classes are the same based on GMATs and GPAs. What is the size difference between the classes? I am also curious if you can give me a sense of what percentage of each class you have accepted already for 2013? ?
Kara -> Dan Dan, we matriculate the following number of students per quarter... Weekend, Autumn 100-120; Evening, Autumn 150-170; Winter 70-90; Spring 70-90; Summer 70-90. We do not publish our acceptance rates.Regarding 2013 classes, we have plenty of space in the spring, summer and fall classes, as most applications are submitted the week of the deadline.
Beck -> Gretchen What is the main advantage of the Chicago Booth MBA compared to the Kellogg program at the NW?
Gretchen -> Beck Beck: We encourage you to visit all of the schools you are interested in attending. In talking specifically about Booth, the flexibility of the Booth curriculum is a leading attractive factor for our prospects. As Chicago Booth is not a lock-step program and there are no required academic classes, you choose what classes you want to take, in what order you take them and how many classes you take per quarter. We want our students to gain the most benefit from our program and therefore giving you a great deal of choice is a program differentiator.
Roman -> Beth I work for a small company and literally have one boss, where should my 2nd recommendation letter come from??
Beth -> Roman Roman - good question. For your second letter of recommendation, you can ask a colleague or someone who you have worked with on a project. Please be sure to explain why you chose your recommenders in your application to help us understand your choices.
PK -> Katie Hi, just curious whether senior & junior year grades are weighted more heavily than 1st and 2nd year grades when looking at GPA's. Tks
Katie -> PK Hi PK: We ask for transcripts from all colleges and universities you attended for undergraduate and graduate school. We use holistic admissions which means we evaluate everything in your application. All this to say, we look at the entire transcript. We also understand that college is a time of discovery and applicants can't go back and change it. If one piece of your application is not as strong, then, I recommend building up the other parts.
VB -> Beth Do you make any exceptions on your GMAT requirement
Beth -> VB VB - all applicants are required to submit either a GMAT or GRE score with their application.
Beck -> Beth Thank you for this initiative (live chat) - it is very helpful. What is the average GMAT score for the Weekend program this year?
Beth -> Beck Beck, the average GMAT score for the Weekend program is 700 but 80% of our incoming students have GMAT scores between 620 and 750.
Harold -> Kara What has been the experience with weather disruptions during winter months for past/current students flying into Chicago for the weekend program?
Kara -> Harold Harold, this is a great question. I have posed this question to dozens of weekend students who fly to Chicago each week. Each person has said they rarely or never missed a class due to weather. Some students will fly in on Friday nights during the winter just to be safe.
VB -> Katie Can you please send me a link to the evening MBA courses offered.
Katie -> VB Hi VB: Great question. We encourage you to explore the course offerings while applying. Here is the link (you do not need to login): http://boothportal.chicagobooth.edu/portal/server.pt/community/course_search/205
Raj_Vonguru -> Beth Good Morning. Can you please briefly touch on the criterion used in evaluating the applications. Are there percenatge points allocated to each stage of the application (essays, interview, community involvement etc)?
Beth -> Raj_Vonguru Raj, our office takes a holistic approach when reviewing applications. We review your essays, transcripts, GMAT, and community involvement. We know you are full-time working professionals and may not have time for as much community involvement as you would like but please be sure to list it in your application. We take all of this into account when making our decision.
n/a -> Gretchen One of the questions on the application form is "To which other graduate business schools are you applying?" why is Booth interested in this information and does it influence the decision to accept an applicant? Thanks in advance.
Gretchen -> n/a n/a: The other school/s that you may put on your application do not influence the Deans decisions. The purpose of the application is for the Deans to gather as much information as possible and our admissions team wants to make sure that we are providing you with all of the relevant information that you may need in your search.
Raj_Vonguru -> Katie Hello. I am intersted in more than one major. Is there any requirement in Booth that I should focus on only one major to graduate with?
Katie -> Raj_Vonguru Hello Raj_Vonguru: At Booth you can earn as many concentrations as you like. Concentrations are smaller than majors and usually require 3-5 courses. You can view the list here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/academics/curriculum/#c
Chon -> Beth I am planning to apply to the Evening MBA program that starts in spring 2013. Will submitting my application earlier help? Or it doesn't matter much as long as I submit it by January 11.
Beth -> Chon Chon - please submit your application when you are ready. Most of our applicants submit in the few weeks prior to the application deadline. Regardless of when you submit, our office will give you a decision within 4-6 weeks.
Brad_B -> Kara In respect to the Post 9/11 GI Bill... I see on va.gov that Booth is listed as offering an unlimited number of students award as Yellow Ribbon status? Is this indeed true?
Kara -> Brad_B Brad, Many of our students who have served in the military are receiving Yellow Ribbon funding. However, I am uncertain if the funds are unlimited. Please send me an email, kara.northcutt@chicagobooth.edu, and I can look into this for you.
Moderator -> Everyone We are half way through the chat and have had great questions so far. Please continue to submit your questions! We will try to answer all of them today.
Naper -> Beth Does the part-time program have the equivalent of the full-time International MBA (IMBA)? Also, I'm very interested in the International Business Exchange program. As a part-time student, can I take a quarter off from work and study at a partner institution abroad?
Beth -> Naper Yes, the part-time program does have the IMBA, for more information and degree requirements please visit http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/weekend/academics/international/imba. If your schedule permits, you can spend a quarter abroad with one of our 33 partner schools. For more information, including which partner schools we work with, please visit http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/weekend/academics/international. If you would like to be connected with a current evening or weekend student who has participated in the IBEP/IMBA program, please email me at Beth.Daily@chicagobooth.edu and I would be happy to put you in contact.
Gretchen -> Everyone Chicago Booth tracks the number of publications or mentions in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, Businessweek, Chicago Tribune, Fortune, Forbes, Economist, TV/Radio networks, and newswires) and during the months of April through July, 2012, Booth was mentioned 315 times in comparison with Columbia (82), Harvard (229), Kellogg (69), MIT (81), Stanford (86), Wharton (147). Booth did a lot of TV interviews and therefore this may not have been a representative period for Booth.
Moderator -> Everyone For those of you interested in Marketing - Check out our Marketing at Chicago Booth website http://www.chicagobooth.edu/macb/ . Learn about the Chicago approach to marketing, our faculty, Booth alumni with successful marketing careers, top recruiters sourcing Chicago talent for marketing, and more!
Eric -> Kara This all sounds fantastic, but I can only think that going to Booth is only a dream. I read the testimonials, the qualifications, and I feel that I do not possess the experience or credentials to qualify for the part-time program. I know my ability to learn and my work ethic, but I do not believe that this can be conveyed through a resume or application. Therefore, what qualities are the admission staff looking for in a potential candidate?
Kara -> EricEric, we look for a wide variety of characteristics in our candidates. Motivation, work ethic, and intellectual curiosity are common characteristics our students possess. Keep in mind that our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, We have students with 2 years of experience, while others have 15 years. It is up to you to tell your story well and explain how the Booth MBA fits into your short term and long term goals. You are guaranteed to get an interview, so you will not have to tell your story only in the online application. I realize the process may seem intimidating, but you will never know if you can get in if you do not apply.
raman -> Beth hello i understand that i can do part of my course work in Bangalore India. is that for select courses ?
beth -> raman Raman - the majority of your coursework needs to be completed at Chicago Booth, in Chicago, with the exception if you were to take classes through our International Business Exchange Program (IBEP). For more information on our IBEP courses, please visit http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/weekend/academics/international
Naper -> Kara Hello, I'm currently taking a class through the GSAL program in the Autumn quarter. I'm interested in applying to Booth for the Spring quarter. Should I wait till the grades for Autumn are released, or can I go ahead and submit an application before that?
Kara -> Naper Naper, yes, it is best to submit your application with your GSAL grades. You will have your grades approximately 10 days past the end of the quarter. You can self report your grades into the application system.
Moderator -> Everyone Our chat will be ending in 15 minutes. Please submit your final questions so we can answer all of them!
Kaza -> Kara Hi, Do weekend students (flying from outside of Chicago area) normally participate in the student clubs/events? Are the clubs/event timings flexible so that Weekend students can participate given the limited time they spend time on campus?
Kara -> Kaza Kaza, yes! Our Weekend MBA students are very involved in the community. The majority of out student group events take place on Saturday during the lunch hour between classes. This allows our Weekend student to be involved.
VB -> Gretchen It appears that your class is geared towards professionals early in their career. Will your course enhance the skill sets of individuals who are experienced and possess the skills of leadership, critical thinking, etc. how does your executive MBA differ from your evening program in this regard?
Gretchen -> VB VB: The years of work experience ranges in the Evening MBA and the Weekend MBA Program from 0-10+ years, with the average years of work experience being 5-6 years. The Executive MBA Program is geared toward professionals who are more senior in his/her career and have an average of tweleve years of work experience. All the programs at Chicago Booth provide you with the opportunity to enhance your skills and experiences. The structure of the programs are different and therefore you can contact our admissions team for more information on which program may be the right fit for you.
Katie -> Everyone We have a really cool series of events called Chicago Conversations that all of you are invited to attend. These events take place across the world and are based on an industry that is relevant to the host city. For example, health care in Minneapolis. See all the topics and cities here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/conversations/events/index.aspx
Dan -> Beth At what point can you schedule an interview? Can you discuss the process of scheduling the interview as well as the typical schedule the day of your interview? Thank you
Beth -> Dan Dan, you can schedule your admissions interview after you submit your application. Once you submit your application, our office will reach out to schedule it. Interviews are typically scheduled 4pm, 5pm or 6pm but we are willing to work with your schedule. Interviews are conducted by members of our Admissions Committee, which is comprised of current students, alumni and staff. Interviews typically last 45-60 minutes.
mscherer1124 -> Gretchen Is there a precedent for part-time students participating in the Venture Capital Investment Competition, the Sterling Partners Investment Thesis competition, or the New Venture Challenge? It looks like these are geared towards the full-time students. Thanks! - Mike Scherer
Gretchen -> mscherer1124 Mike, great to hear from you. All three of the competitions that you mentioned are certainly open to part-time students as well. If you would like more information on any of them please let me know.
raman -> Katie hello i would like to get a jump start. i am considering enrolling into Graham school. I have an Engg. degree. what courses do you suggest, so they can transfer to the summer mba program. thanks
Katie -> raman Hi Raman: Graham School is a great way to test drive the Booth classroom. You can take Booth classes as a non-degree seeking student through the GSAL program. Up to 3 courses can count toward your Booth degree. We suggest taking foundational classes which include microeconomics, business statistics, and financial accounting. Here is more information on applying to the Graham School: https://grahamschool.uchicago.edu/content/gsal-application
Moderator -> Everyone We have ten minutes left in the chat! Please submit your final questions and we will be happy to answer them!
Raj -> Kara Roughly how many hours of work do weekend students typically spend on coursework (including group meetings, classes, etc.)
Kara -> Raj Raj, this varies from class to class. I would say three to five hours per class is a good estimate. This will also vary based on your expertise. As you register for classes, you will have access to course reviews. Reviews include the time students report spending out of class. This is very helpful in helping you pair your courses.
raman -> Beth hello, are part time mba students allowed to participate in interviews during the last quarter ? because we are employed
Beth -> raman Raman, Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students can choose to go through the On Campus Recruiting (OCR) after 12 classes have been completed and having a waiver signed, if applicable.
Gretchen -> Everyone Read our news story about our alum, Chris Walters, COO of The Weather Channel: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/news/2012-11-12-sandy.aspx

To read more about what our Booth alums are doing in the professionals paths, read our blog: http://blogs.chicagobooth.edu/n/blogs/blog.aspx?webtag=ewadmissions&nav=main
Raj -> Kara Are there any scholarships for the weekend program? if so what is the criteria?
Kara -> Raj Raj, we do not offer scholarships for the Evening MBA or Weekend MBA. It is difficult to find part time programs that offer scholarships. You will have access to student loans.
Raj_Vonguru -> Katie Hello. Can you please give an estimate on the tution costs for the evening MBA program. Thanks
Katie -> Raj_Vonguru The cost per course is $5,524 and 20 courses are required to graduate. You can view the details here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/admissions/tuition-financial-aid
Gretchen -> Everyone Zee: What are the strengths of your program? Does it matter to you that I have to travel from the east coast?

Krishna: 1) Are weekend MBA students allowed to do recruiting in second year with FT students?

Raj_Vonguru: Can you please talk about campus recruiting and how is it different when compared to the full-time MBA

Roman: Hey all, Im currently a Day Trader in the Chicago area, so the evening MBA program really appeals to me. VB: It appears that your class is geared towards professionals early in their career. Will your course enhance the skill sets of individuals who are experienced and possess the skills of leadership, critical thinking, etc. how does your executive MBA differ from your evening program in this regard?

This is the time to start an application for Chicago Booth if you have not already. If would like to be a part of the 2013 Weekend MBA Program, we look forward to receiving your application by May 10th.
Ajoe -> Beth Hi! I know I read online that Part-time MBA students are not eligible for any financial aids. But are there any exceptions to this rule? Anything we can do to qualify for the aids?
Beth -> Ajoe Ajoe, every student is eligible for financial aid. For more information on Financial Aid, please visit: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/admissions/tuition-financial-aid. Also, as an incoming student our financial aid advisors will reach out to you.
