Winter 2012

Obtaining a Career in Corporate Strategy and Management

The CSMG hosted a panel discussion on February 18 for students interested in a career in corporate strategy and/or management. We invited current students who had recently found opportunities in corporate strategy and/or management either through OCR or on their own. They shared their success stories with the group, answered questions about the recruiting process, and more.

Business Leader Discussion 

The CSMG group invited Dr. Louis L. Schorsch, president and CEO of Flat Carbon Americas and Group Management Board member of ArcelorMittal (#74 in the Fortune 500) for a discussion. Schorsch was a former partner and coleader of the Global Metals and Mining practice at McKinsey & Company. Students learned about the keys to a successful career as a strategy consultant and management executive. Newly named deputy dean of the parttime program, professor Robert Gertner moderated this event that was held on December 20.

Fall 2011

Fit Interview Demonstration

 The Corporate Strategy and Management Group (CSMG) held a live demonstration of a "fit" interview on Saturday September 24th in room 200. In this live demonstration, our interviewer, John King of Aon Hewitt (Booth alum) critiqued g a participant's interviewing skills while advising on best practices.  

Following this one on one mock FIT interview sessions were conducted to provide students personalized feedback and get them OCR ready

Corporate Strategy/General Management Panel Discussion

On Saturday July 16 from 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm in Room 306  the CSMG brougt in panelists from top organizations in the Chicago area who shared their  career and personal stories and the students utilized the opportunity to learn about Corporate Strategy & General Management functions, the industry and the firm cultures.

The Panel discussion  comprised a 45 minute moderated Q&A session followed by 15 minutes of free-form discussions, to allow questions from the audience

Keys to Research for Corporate Roles

Keys to Research for Corporate Roles (January 29, 2011) is a function-focused introduction to 10+ resources available to students. The event highlighted the tools students can use to research their industry and function, learn more about a specific company, create a target list of companies and/or contacts, and keep up with industry news. This program was most helpful for students that have determined which function they are targeting and are ready to take a deeper dive into the resources best suited to research their area of interest.

This event was presented jointly with Career Services.

Resume Swap Workshop

The Resume Swap Workshop (January 22, 2011) focused on creating a strong resume by presenting the four principles of effective resume writing. Students participated in two resume swaps where they were able to receive feedback on their resumes from other students.

This event was presented by facilitators trained by Career Services.

Social Media in Practice

This speaker event (October 21, 2010) hosted professionals that discussed how they have incorporated social media into their corporate and marketing strategies and how it has impacted their business.

Leadership Rotational Programs

A panel discussion event (July 10, 2010) that focused on leadership rotational programs. The event hosted a panel of professionals from different companies that shared their experiences and insights into leadership rotational programs, followed by a Q&A session with students. A networking session followed.

Insights from Both Sides of the Table

This speaker event (May 22, 2010) featured John King, '10, who worked at McKinsey for six years and is currently the vice president of strategy at AON. John described his career and contrasted his experiences in strategy consulting and in his current strategy role in a corporation. A Q&A session followed.

Keys to Research Session

Corporate Strategy and General Management 'Strategy in Action' Panel Discussion

Held on November 15, the event offered an opportunity to learn about the experiences and perspectives of current corporate strategy and general management professionals. Panelists include: Greg Besio, Aon; Julia Chen, Exelon; Christopher Bonn, Motorola; and Ryan Ostrom, Sears.
