To the GSB Community:
On behalf of the University and the GSB, I am pleased to announce that Robert H. Topel, Isidor Brown and Gladys J. Brown Professor in Urban and Labor Economics, has been appointed with the Provost’s enthusiastic support to a three-year term as Director of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State, effective September 1.
Regarding his appointment, Bob said, “George Stigler was my colleague, mentor and, most of all, my friend. He was a great economist. It is an honor to direct a Center named for ‘Adam Smith’s best friend.’”
Bob’s research interests include industrial organization, health economics, labor markets, and compensation and organizations. A respected researcher, Bob has published six books and more than 60 articles. He is a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research and a member of the ERN Labor Journals Advisory Board. Bob also has been active in the work of the Stigler Center, which last year supported his work with Kevin Murphy into the value of health and longevity.
The Stigler Center, a University-wide Center administered by the GSB, is dedicated to supporting economic research about the interaction between the private economy and the state. I am confidant that Bob’s term as Director will support and strengthen the work of the Center throughout the University.
Sincerely.
Ted Snyder
