BOSS magazine, published by The Australian Financial Review, conducted a lengthy interview with Robert Fogel, Nobel laureate and Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of American Institutions, in September when he was on a tour to promote his latest book, The Escape from Hunger and Premature Death.
Considered Australia’s version of Fortune, BOSS referred to Fogel as “one of the world’s greatest economists.” The interview spanned such topics as a historical look at how changes in the amount of food production has affected human physiology; how America’s natural resources contributed to its economic dominance; and how agricultural efficiency led to a rise in urbanization.
In the book, Fogel also looks at how the resulting increase in life expectancy and affluence is changing our lives and society. His discussion touches upon leisure, education, employment, consumerism and health care.
The BOSS interview, “Our place in the universe”, was conducted on September 20, 2005.
A related article, “Why we want it all” ran in BOSS.
