University of Chicago Ranks First in Economic and Business Research

A survey of nearly 200 economic and business journals indexed by Thomson Scientific since 1995 ranks the University of Chicago first in terms of impact. When it comes to the number of citations, Chicago ranks fourth (the National Bureau of Economic Research is first).

When broken down by author, three GSB professors are listed in the top 25 “most cited”. Robert Vishny, Eric J. Gleacher Distinguished Service Professor of Finance, ranks as the second most cited author in the last 10 years. Vishny also is a co-author of one of the most cited papers (nearly 400 mentions), “Law and Finance,” from the Journal of Political Economics.

Gene Fama, Robert R. McCormick Distinguished Service Professor of Finance, is 14 th on the list. Luigi Zingales, Robert C. McCormack Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance, appears as number 18. The GSB placed second behind Harvard (4) in the list of the 25 most-cited authors.

The survey was published in the November/December 2005 issue of Science Watch.
