Professor James Lorie’s contribution to stock price research remembered

The Chicago Tribune took a look at the life and accomplishments of James Lorie, PhD ’47, who established the Center for Research in Security Prices at the GSB. Lorie passed away on August 6. His groundbreaking work charting the history of stock prices made it possible to analyze long-range market performance, acknowledged Milton Friedman. This eventually led to the creation of index funds.

Lorie’s 45-year career at the GSB spanned numerous other accomplishments. He helped recruit such leading professors for the GSB as George Stigler, who went on to win the Nobel Prize. As an associate dean, he helped introduce the Chicago Approach to business management education. The Approach incorporates sociology and anthropology and other disciplines to provide a framework for understanding complex marketplace dynamics.
