| 1970 Cyril Baldachin is the chairman of Compugen Systems Ltd., a PC platform integrator with nine offices in Canada. Baldachin writes: I am probably due to slow down somewhat and enjoy the latter part of my life. Regards to any classmates that were in the 190 program from 1967 to 1970. Roberta Bobbi Fairchild Davis retired last year from J.P. Morgan after 28 years. For the past three years, I have been bouncing back and forth between New York and Hong Kong, where my husband has been working. I finally joined him in residence this summer following our younger sons graduation from high school, she writes. Hong Kong and retirement kept me busy, with travel throughout much of Asia and volunteer work here at the Hong Kong YMCA. If anyone comes this way before April, please look me up. After April, well be in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Evelyn Lazare writes: The older I get, the more changes I have in my life. One of the most recent is that Im operating a bed and breakfast out of my condo on the water. If youre visiting Vancouver, check it out at www.personalizedtravel.net. 1971 Jim Iberg ended his 19-year practice as a psychotherapist to come back to his GSB roots with an entrepreneurial venture. Iberg organized a group of therapists in Chicago who offer reduced-fee psychotherapy and other services especially for people not using insurance benefits. The company is called Quinpro (www.quinpro. com), which stands for quality independent professionals. Donald R. Sheley Jr. writes: The recent acquisition of the Standard Products Company of Dearborn, Michigan, by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company of Findlay, Ohio, has provided me the opportunity to retire and enjoy family and personal interests on a full-time basis. My wife and I will be returning to Houston, where we lived from 1974 to 1995. For the past four years, Sheley has been the vice president of finance and chief financial officer of Standard Products. Samuel Silver writes: My wife, Barbara Coveny, and I sold our custom carpet manufacturing business, U.S. Axminster, which we started in 1987, to Brintons Ltd. of the United Kingdom. We retired last Thanksgiving and have taken off for six months to plan the next phase of our lives. 1974 Bob Wilkening (see Collin Anderson, 96) 1975 Michele J. Hooper has become president and CEO of Voyager Expanded Learning Inc. (www.iamvoyager.com), based in Dallas. Voyager is a private start-up company that develops and implements learning programs for children from kindergarten to eighth grade. Hooper also was elected to the board of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Foundation. She and her husband, Lemuel Seabrook III, A.B. 74, M.B.A.75, live in Evanston, Illinois. Bob Kayhs is executive vice president of DHR International, a Chicago-based retained search firm. Kayhs heads the Internet, e-commerce, and technology practice in southern California. Hank Lambert joined Efdex Inc. as president of the North American division. Efdex is a business-to-business online trading system and information resource for the food and beverage industry. 1976 Peter H. Calfee assumed the chair of the Board of Examiners of the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards on January 1. He is also president of Calfee Financial Advisors Inc.in Cleveland. Ramon S. Monzon is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Citadel Holdings Inc., an investment management company. Monzon lives with his wife, Lorrain Schuck, in the Philippines. They have three children: Bianca Louise, 21; Marco Leoncio, 15; and Samantha Anne, 11. Monzon reports that he and other GSB alumni in the Philippines have started to plan several alumni activities in the country. Alexander Sandy Weissent writes: I just completed the sale of a software development company in Maine after finishing its three-year restructuring and turnaround. Im working on the transition to independent operation of a recent acquisition of a Hershey Food Corp. spin-off in Savannah, Georgia. Im continuing work on the strategic planning for a large clearing firm at the Board of Trade. Im initiating the start-up of the Deerfield Academy Club of Chicago and Im on the executive committee of the Deerfield Academy Alumni Association. Im also competing in the national championships for the Mens Senior Baseball League in Phoenix for a 30+ and 50+ team. 1977 Maureen Brodsky is running her own business producing custom hand-painted tile in Chesterfield, Missouri. Kenneth R. Gray is in Ifrane, Morocco, completing a senior Fulbright Fellowship teaching in the School of Business Administration at Al Akhawayn University. The research Im conducting here involves entrepreneurship and microenterprise development as a vehicle for poverty alleviation, he writes. Bruce Masterson reports that he recently became president and chief operating officer of AX.com, the Asset Exchange. The Chicago-based company is creating the first online auction marketplace for alternative financial assets. Mary Wilkerson began a four-year term as elected school board member of the Evanston Township High School District 202 Board of Education in November. Wilkersons daughter is in the college of the University of Chicago and will graduate in June. She is having a wonderful experience in the ACM/Tanzania program and characterizes her climbing of Mount Kilimanjaro and visit to Zanzibar as awesome. 1978 R. H. Bailin (see Collin Anderson, 96) Paul Ying is now group senior vice president of the USI Far East Corp., the second largest petrochemical group in Taiwan. He is also executive vice president of Swanson Plastic Corp. With the new position he returned to his hometown, Taipei, after living abroad for 26 years. Taiwan is a totally different place now, with all kinds of exciting opportunities as well as headaches, he writes. My family and I are adjusting to the hustle and bustle way of Taipei living. Not an easy task after enjoying Singapore for the past 12 years. Taipei has a lot to offer and has a reasonable number of Chicago alumni. Please look me up on your next trip to Taiwan. 1979 Steve Field is general manager of Impact Systems Inc., a computer software and consulting firm in Delaware. He also is looking at colleges with his oldest son. Gregory Swienton was appointed president of Ryder Systems of Miami, Florida, on June 15. Swienton supervises the presidents of the three business units. Diane Wood joined Verity Investment Management Group in Jacksonville, Florida, as partner and executive vice president. Previously she was vice president and chief investment officer at Allmerica Financial Corp. and Allmerica Asset Management. |
