| 1994 CLIFF ASNESS, M.B.A. 91, Ph.D. 94, formed AQR Capital Management, an investment management firm. John Liew, M.B.A. 94, Ph.D. 95, joined Asness in the new venture. Asness previously served as managing director at Goldman Sachs in charge of the quantitative research group in the asset management division. ROBERT A. COX is founder, CEO, and president of MobileWord Communications L.L.C. A former management consultant, Cox formed the company in 1996 with a small group of investors from the University of Chicago. MobileWords initial product, TalkText, provides online digital delivery of voice processed files over the Internet. Cox lives in New Rochelle, New York, with his wife and their three children. ED CROOKS and his wife, Susan, moved to London last fall, when he became project finance manager for International Water, Ltd. "Our company is a joint venture of Bechtel (U.S.) and United Utilities (U.K.) and is dedicated to developing and financing privatized water ventures globally," he writes. "We moved to England 10 days after the birth of our second son, Henry. Our first child, Will, is now 2-1/2. This past Halloween, while trick-or-treating with the kids, we ran into a GSB 94 cohort-mate, Gerry Dentinger, who lives only a mile or so from us here in Wimbledon. Jerry and his wife, Patty, were making the Halloween rounds of the American homes in the area with their two sons Kevin and Jack." PETER GERRITSEN (see TERESA ALVAREZ, 91) CLAIRE (BALDIKOWSKI) KOENEMAN reports that she and KEITH are managing their nonstop work schedules and travel. "Keith is a vice president doing mergers and acquisitions for Robertson Stephens and I am vice president at the Financial Relations Board as a REIT specialist." BOB RUSSELL was recently promoted to head of products and services for the Chicago-based Aerial Communications. Previously he was head of customer products for Aerial, a provider of wireless communications in six U.S. cities. Russell lives in Grayslake, Illinois. SIMONA SIMUT joined Bank of Americas leveraged finance group in New York as vice president, where she will work closely with LBO firms to identify investment opportunities and finance acquisitions. WOUTER BOGAERT left Cleveland and embarked on a new adventure in Pittsburgh with FreeMarkets On Line, an online bidding services firm founded by fellow McKinsey alums. Wouter joined the company as director of market making. His wife, Anju, finished her Ph.D. in Cleveland and is looking for a position in Pittsburgh. "For those of you planning to be in our area," Bogaert writes, "our home in Pittsburgh will always have fresh Belgian beer." RICARDO BRENTAR writes: "With new responsibilities in the Latin American region for bond and credit reinsurance with GE Capital, I am moving on to sunny Coral Gables, Florida, with my wife, Lee Ann, and our two-year-old son, Caio. JOHN BUDITJAHJONO is engaged to be married this December in Singapore. His fiance, Lorraine, is from Singapore. MARY L. BURKE joined Imperial Holly Corporation as managing director and chief financial officer. Imperial Holly is a producer and marketer of refined sugar based in Sugar Land, Texas. EUGENE CHUNG writes: "I have been in Hong Kong for a couple of years now, and have been with SBC Warburg Dillion Read (soon to be UBS) after leaving Morgan Stanley a year and a half ago." MARY DEFILIPPO left her position at Nielsen Media Research after 18 months in New York and headed west. Though she arrived in San Francisco jobless, she met up with a helpful GSB West Coast contingentLiska Barker, Ken Aoki, and Drew Lewinand within a month she took a position with Oracle as part of the product management team. For the last 10 months she has been charged with building a business-to-business electronic commerce channel for Oracle. On the personal side, she married Tim Dailey in April. BEN DESOLLAR sends greetings from Hong Kong, where hes been since 1995. Hes now with Chase Manhattan, working on corporate and project finance deals in China, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Korea, and Indonesia. He welcomes visits from GSB friends. JOHN ERICKSEN and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of a baby daughter, Katie, who is now 19 months. Katie will be gaining a sister or brother around October. TONY FENNER-LEITAO reports that he moved from Union Bank of Switzerland to Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette to help set up the international equity business. "I am now in close proximity to three class of 95 GSBers: ED GOLDSTEIN, MARCELO DI LORENZO, and BERNARD HUBENET," he writes, "though I can never get to see them because they are too busy." Fenner-Leitao lives in New York City. HEIDI HOFFMAN writes: "Its about that time in our post-M.B.A. careers when the consultants are looking for their next great challenge. I stumbled upon mine by chance last September on an airplane returning from a particularly grueling week at my Booz Allen client. The guy next to me was chatting it upyou consultants know the typebut it turned out he was a GSB grad who worked for Russell Reynolds Associates. Two and a half hours later I had an interview scheduled and two months later I joined the Chicago office! Russell Reynolds is a leading global executive recruiting firm (we hate to be called headhunters) and I am an associate in the industrial sector. I absolutely love it. I have challenges similar to consulting but work fewer hours, less travel, and better pay. I actually look forward to going to work each day. Moral of the story: always be nice to people on airplanesthey could change your life." Reporting "from the home office in Beirut overlooking the calm Mediterranean," NAJIB MAALOUF writes that SELIM GHORAYEB, 75, invited nine U of C alums to lunch in June. "None of us knew everyone else," Maalouf writes, "so it was a good opportunity to become acquainted with new faces. The first topics were about the Bulls performance but inevitably veered toward something like How did you tolerate Chicagos wind, and, of course, What on earth are you doing in Beirut?" Seven of the nine present were grads of either the GSB or the economics department, so the conversation included an intense debate about the banking merger sweeping Beirut. More frequent meetings are planned. NICHOLAS A. NICHOLSON accepted a senior consultant position with the Oracle OPG Vertical Consulting Group of Oracle Corporation in Chicago. In addition, his wife, Estelle (Voula), gave birth to their "future GSBer" Matthew Nicholas on September 24. Matthew joins Andrea Nicole, who is playing the new role of big sister. KEVIN OSHEA is now at Societe General in New York City, doing mergers and acquisitions investment banking. ROBERT RAFFALO JR. was selected to serve on the 1998 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Raffalo is marketing director at Moore Medical Corp. in New Britain, Connecticut. TIM RULE and his wife, Tifani, are both working for Case Corporation in Racine, Wisconsin. Tim is the sales and marketing controller for the construction equipment business unit, and Tifani is working in the corporate communications department. Their son, Spencer, 5, now has a brother, Jordan, who is 20 months old. Jordan, who eats more than Spencer, enjoys watching Barney and wrestling toys away from his brother. RALPH SHAYNE writes that he joined WorldCom a year ago in a strategic planning role, where he evaluates telecommunications investment opportunities. He lives in Chicago. MICHAEL SZWAJKOWSKI, with his wife, Eliza, and their three children, moved from Chicago to New York in late 1996. Szwajkowski now works in the principal transactions group at Credit Suisse First Boston where he heads the esoteric asset-backed trading desk. MARK USHER is now a manager in Andersen Consultings logistics strategy practice in Los Angeles. He and his wife, Alison, had their second child on June 24. Natalie joins big sister Victoria, 8. They love the California life and recently put down some roots, buying a home in Thousand Oaks, California, about 45 miles northwest of L.A. 1996 TVESTAN BELORESHKI reports that he recently returned to the U.S. after a wonderful time with Paribas Emerging Markets Group in London. The firm reassigned him to New York City. MARC BIRENBAUM writes: "I am working in the leveraged/high yield finance group at NationsBanc Montgomery Securities in Dallas along with MICHAEL MORAVEC, although Mike will be moving to the New York office soon. My wife, Jana, and I recently purchased a new home in North Dallas that is keeping us both very busy. David Gregory is helping out quite a bit with the yard work. If you live in Dallas and need any help, Id give David a great recommendation." JIM KASPAR and family recently moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Jim is working in derivatives sales for First Union Capital Markets. KATHRYN KLUNZINGER GANLEY and JAMES GANLEY married on September 27. They are living in London. JON and CHARLENE KLEINKE welcomed their first child on January 23 at 5:30 a.m. Cooper Richard Kleinke was five pounds, nine ounces and 19 inches long. The family lives in Aurora, Ohio. FELICIA LEVY writes: "The Russian winter hasnt diminished my enthusiasm for living and working in Moscow. KENNETH MAHER reports that he has moved from General Motors to Coopers & Lybrand, where he is a manager in the financial advisory services group. He lives in Detroit. SUBHASH and ROOPA MAKHIJA are pleased to announce the birth of their baby, Neil Makhija. Both Neil and Roopa are doing well. The family lives in Westfield, New Jersey. JACK MCCARTHY recently moved to London with his wife, Lisa, where he continues to work as a principal of BancAmerica Equity Partners, an affiliate of BankAmerica Corp, focused on making direct private equity investments in the European markets. BARRY MILLER writes: "Prior to taking my current job out in California, my wife and I took a well-deserved three week vacation to France, Germany, and Belgium. On December 1, 1996, we relocated to the Central California Valley where Im doing strategic planning for Pacific Coast Producers, a small food manufacturer. The job is great and the company and people here are even better. My regards to the GSB and particularly to members of the 96 evening program." JAMIE MORRISON reports that he was promoted from senior financial analyst to finance manager with the technology group at Kraft Foods in Tarrytown, New York. He and his wife welcomed their second child, Abigail Louise, on February 16. She weighed in at eight pounds, ten ounces. HO NGUYEN recently moved to Fuji Bank in New York from Brandywine Asset Management to do proprietary trading. "The move was facilitated by KAZUO NISHIMURA, who was in the same cohort with me. He and I form a great team here," Nguyen writes. ROSETTE NGUYEN writes: "After working in Lucent Treasury in New Jersey for a year, I have moved to Hewlett-Packard Treasury in Palo Alto, California. I am in the process of starting an alumni club for recent grads as a subset of the existing alumni club for the San Francisco Bay region. This idea was inspired by a group of classmates who attended a regional class dinner in April." SVEN ROSE accepted a new position with Degussas automotive catalyst division and moved to Turin, Italy as marketing and sales manager. His responsibilities now include coordinating global sales activities for Fiat in Europe, South America, and South Africaa $40 million account to Degussa. He will also develop business at various Italian motorcycle accounts. JOHN SCHNEIDER was named director for marketing and product development at Rand McNally. His primary responsibility is the flagship Rand McNally Road Atlas. STEVE TURK writes that he left Procter & Gamble to accept a product management position at the Sunbeam Corporation in Delray Beach, Florida. SUSAN TUTTLE reports that she is still at Lehman Brothers in high yield research, but has specialized in health care. "Ive started picking up my own companies, which is exciting," she writes. "Also, Ive been to Greece and Paris and gone skiing at Killington three times this winter, so Im having fun." She lives in New York City. HEIDI WISBACH writes: "Im still working for Ernst & Young, but recently took the plunge into real estate and bought a vintage rehab two-bedroom condo just north of Lincoln Park in Chicago." |
