The GSBs longevity seems to have rubbed off on a few of its graduates.
VIOLET FEILCHENFELD HIMMEL for instance, is busy and active at age 92 1/2. A Hyde Park resident
and graduate of the Laboratory School, she celebrated her 75th
high school reunion on June 6. Fellow classmates in attendance
included Charles Walgreen and Gerald Gidwitz,27.
She writes: "I still volunteer weekly at Michael Reese Hospital
and I work one day a week at Northwestern Thrift Shop on Chicago
Avenue. I have seven great-grandchildren living in Washington
D.C. I visit them four times a year. I still drive my car, live
alone, and never stay home.
"My husband always said age is not a matter of years but a state
of mind, and you could say that Im a peppy old lady. I played
golf until a few years back, before a hip replacement, and my
daughters and I won several mother-daughter tournaments. The two
saddest things in my life were the loss of my husband of 59 years
and the loss of my 59-year-old daughter three years later. God
has been good to me and I am most grateful."
