dusable conference
Davis at DuSable: Erroll B. Davis Jr., ’67, was one of several GSB alumni who convened in Chicago for the annual DuSable Business Conference in April.

Davis’s Tips for Success
At the DuSable Conference, Davis offered the following advice:

  • Realize that personal integrity and success are inexorably linked.

  • Achieve flexibility. Those who do thrive and endure.

  • Distinguish personal limits from those imposed by others. “Whether we rightly or wrongly believe limits are being set for us by others, the danger is that it seduces us into not understanding our own limits.”

  • Master the basics and develop an ethic that includes hard work, commitment, and attention to detail. “These things never go out of style.”

  • Cultivate a voracious appetite for feedback, then be prepared to act.

  • Realize that all careers are built on small successes and failures; successful careers simply contain more successes.

  • Don’t overvalue formal procedures; innovation fuels success. “Otherwise, you can expect to become toast overnight.”

  • Know that you can make lasting changes, but first position yourself to do so.--S.D.
