FROM THE CHAIRS
Campaign Surpasses $100 Million Mark

After only 11 months, the GSB capital campaign reached the $111 million mark toward its five-year, $175 million goal. Its success is due in large part to generous gifts from supporters such as Peter May, A.B. ’64, M.B.A. ’65, who pledged $5 million last summer. (See “Behind the Campaign.”) May and other committed individuals have helped the campaign come closer to achieving its objectives– –endowed professorships, student scholarships, a new integrated campus and residence hall, and first-rate research centers. (See “Alumni Support Capital Campaign.”)

New York City Celebrates the Campaign
Nearly $25 million of campaign gifts have come from New York-area alumni. Last October, about 160 alumni and guests from New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey attended a campaign event in their honor at Manhattan’s Pierre Hotel. (See “Celebrating a ‘Winning Enterprise. ’”) Dean Robert S. Hamada; campaign co-chair and New York resident Andrew Alper, A.B. ’80, M.B.A. ’81; and the university’s new president, Don Michael Randel, celebrated the campaign’s recent successes. Also in attendance were the New York campaign celebration committee members: Mark B. Chasin, ’66; Thomas W. Davis, ’77; Brady W. Dougan, A.B. ’81, M.B.A. ’82; Tracy G. Gardner, ’90; Eric J. Gleacher, ’67; A. Richard Janiak, ’70; Robert E. Kiernan III, ’87; James M. Kilts, ’74; Jerry W. Levin, ’68; James W. Lewis, ’70; Sherman R. Lewis Jr., ’64; Peter W. May, A.B. ’64, M.B.A. ’65; Aviva Shrock Pinto, ’83; Kenneth A. Posner, ’91; Clayton S. Rose, A.B. ’80, M.B.A. ’81; and James L. Singleton, ’84.

Chicago GSB Fund
The Chicago GSB Fund, formerly known as the Annual Fund, has a close and important association with the capital campaign: It is responsible for generating $20 million of our $175 million goal. To assist the Chicago GSB Fund in this endeavor, Damon Cates, former director of development at the university’s law school, joined the fund staff as director in August. (See “New Director for Chicago GSB Fund.”)

As Cates joins the Chicago GSB Fund, we recognize Ken Kaufman, ’76, managing director of Kaufman, Hall & Associates, who has served the fund in many different leadership capacities, including national chair, during the last 10 years. Kaufman, who stepped down from the Chicago GSB Fund steering committee in early October 2000, most recently served as the Laureates chair. We thank him for his many years of strong dedication and commitment to the GSB and its fundraising efforts.
