I OFTEN ASK for your input regarding new initiatives. Your opinions and comments weigh heavily in the alumni office decision making. I again ask for your help regarding an exciting opportunity. As you are aware, the university currently has no physical alumni club building such as the Harvard Club and the Penn Club in New York City.

When Gleacher Center was completed in 1994, the fifth floor was left unfinished to allow for future expansion. As part of the buildout that is now proposed for 1998, we are considering if a membership-based alumni club should be included in the floor plan. Tentatively, the club would have a large central lounge with comfortable seating and telephones; a dining area with a tended bar; small private meeting rooms; and a business center equipped with computers, connections for portable electronic equipment of all types, fax machines, and so forth. A concierge service also would be available to help with everything from hotel reservations to Bulls tickets. Members needing space for larger meetings or dinners would be able to reserve space on the sixth floor. The balance of the fifth floor would be used for the executive education center and staff offices.

The membership charge would be modest–$250 per year or so–and limited to alumni. Our sense is that in addition to the emotional value of a space for alumni and their guests to gather exclusively, there are many practical benefits to such a club. Alumni from the suburbs or outside the Chicago area who are doing business in the city would, we think, appreciate an upscale, prestigious, central location from which to meet clients, conduct meetings, or hold a lunch with friends. Independent consultants and small business owners might benefit from such a facility as well.

I would prefer to proceed with these plans with some measure of assurance that you support the idea of such a facility. Please take the time to participate in this edition's 'Sound Off' online survey. I will keep you informed of your responses and how this evolves.

ALUMNI DIRECTORY

If you missed the opportunity to do so earlier, you can still order a copy of the five-year alumni directory published by Harris Publications. The number of hard copies or CD ROMs available is limited, however so if you would like one and haven’t placed your order, please call 1-800-827-6654 to reserve your copy without delay.

A TIME OF CELEBRATION

October was an especially busy month at the GSB. On October 11 and 12, we held a European reunion at our campus in Barcelona. We kicked off on Saturday with lunch followed by a panel session with Dennis Keller, ’68, chairman of the Council on the Graduate School of Business, Dean Hamada, and deputy deans Robin Hogarth and Mark Zmijewski providing an update on the state of the School.

The afternoon featured a discussion regarding the European Monetary Union moderated by Dean Hamada. Panelists included Robert Conway, ’69, of Goldman Sachs; Richard Leftwich, Fuji Bank and Heller Professor of Accounting and Finance; and Canice Prendergast, professor of economics. After a cocktail party later that evening we all boarded buses to a historic restaurant and partied until the wee hours. Alumni and IXP students awoke on Sunday to a networking brunch followed by a tour of the city. If you have never visited Barcelona, I would suggest that you plan a trip ASAP. What an incredible city! What an incredible building! Run–do not walk–to your travel agent!

On October 17, we held a party and more than 1,000 people came. A similar dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, at the University Club in New York City. Mark your calendars and be sure to respond early to the invitation. Space at the University Club is limited and reservations will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also in October, we received the wonderful news that Myron Scholes, M.B.A. ’67, Ph.D. ’70, won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences–the first GSB alumnus to do so. We have become more than a little blasé about our faculty receiving the nod from Stockholm, but each of us alumni should feel exceptionally proud that one of our own has been so honored.

It is time for the members of the classes of 1983, 1988, 1993, and 1996 to make plans to return to Hyde Park for their reunions May 12. If you would like to join the planning committee for your class, please contact alumni@gsb.uchicago.edu. The classes of 1948, 1963, 1973, and 1978 will be honored at the third annual Alumni Celebration on October 9, 1998.

CAREER OPORTUNITIES ONLINE

I couldn’t close without some career management info. We’re pleased to announce that the electronic version of our popular Alumni Career Management newsletter is now available. Updated twice weekly, this provides job listings that are more current than the hard copy version and is particularly convenient for alumni outside of the United States. Anyone subscribing to the paper version will have access to the online version as well. Please note that you must have an E-mail 4 Life account and password to access the online listings. Send a message to sign up for E-mail 4 Life. For a subscription to the newsletter, call Angie Raines at the alumni career center at (312) 464-8684, send a fax to (312) 464-8755.
