SRI VENTURES

The Business Behind Innovation

Norm Winarsky, SB’69, SM’70, and PhD’74, VP, Ventures, Licensing and Strategic Programs at SRI International, presented on SRI’s identification and development of the highest-value commercial market opportunities from initial concept through commercialization as a license or venture. Helping found more than 25 ventures, Winarsky’s team has developed an innovative model for engaging Silicon Valley venture capitalists at the earliest stages of the venture creation process, nurturing technology and business concepts to create high-value funding opportunities.

SRI International is one of the world’s leading independent research and technology development organizations. Perhaps best known for its invention of the computer mouse and interactive computing, SRI has also been responsible for major advances in networking and communications, robotics, drug discovery and development, advanced materials, atmospheric research, education research, economic development, national security, and more.

Speaker Dr. Winarsky received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1969, 1970, and 1974, respectively, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Winarsky also volunteers as Chairman of the University of Chicago Visiting Committee for the Physical Sciences Division.
