Francesco Trebbi

Francesco Trebbi studies political economy, applied econometrics, and macroeconomics. "I work on the design of political and economic institutions. In simple terms, on the design of 'the rules of the game' in political and economic systems, their causes and their consequences," he explains. "Who decides these rules and what objectives do they serve? What are their effects?"
Among his publications are "Institutions Rule: The Primacy of Institutions Over Geography and Integration in Economic Development" written with D. Rodrik and A. Subramanian that appeared in the Journal of Economic Growth in 2004; "Endogenous Political Institutions" written with P. Aghion and A. Alesina that appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in 2004; and "Electoral Rules and Corruption" written with T. Persson and G. Tabellini that appeared in the Journal of the European Economic Association in 2003. He is a former research assistant at the National Bureau of Economic Research and served an internship at the International Monetary Fund. He referees articles for 18 publications, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Review of Economic Studies.
Trebbi joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 2006 and is a former teaching fellow at Harvard University, where he received the Graduate Instruction Committee Award for Excellence in Teaching Economics in 2003. \nHe has received four fellowships or scholarships, including the Graduate Society Dissertation Completion Fellowship at Harvard in 2005, Applied Economics Fellowship from the Social Sciences Research Council in 2002 and 2003, and Marco Fanno Scholarship from Mediocredito Centrale in Rome from 2000 t0 2002.
Trebbi earned a PhD in economics in 2006 and a master's degree in economics in 2003. He earned his laurea in economics summa cum laude at Universit Bocconi in Milan in 1999. He joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 2006.
