Timothy G. Conley, a recipient of a National Science Foundation grant, studies applied econometrics. He often works on empirical questions in the fields of development economics and industrial organization. Most of his research involves spatial models used to study phenomena like diffusion of information, retail competition, and spillover effects. "My research provides ways to analyze data from individuals whose circumstances and outcomes are interrelated," he explains. Conley's work can be found in the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Econometrics, and the Journal of Economic Growth. He is an associate editor for the Economics Bulletin and has done a small amount of econometrics consulting work for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as well as the Panama Canal Authority.
His goal for his students is for them to acquire the ability to apply a key set of tools and concepts that are useful for analyzing data in a large number of situations.
He is one of a rare breed of people who cannot manage to leave the University of Chicago. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1990 with honors, a master's degree in 1990, and a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1996 - all in economics. Conley briefly taught at Northwestern University before returning to he University of Chicago this time as a faculty member in 2001.
When he's not on campus, Conley enjoys spending time with his three daughters.
