The global economic downturn has had a huge impact on new capital flows across the globe and the renewable energy sector is no exception. There are a number of fundamental growth drivers in the sector: higher energy prices; an aging, out of date, and inadequate infrastructure; increasing environmental regulations and corporate mandates; and national energy security and independence. All of these drivers are bolstered by great technology innovation and economic stimulus. With all of this in mind, there is one overarching question that in people's minds: Where is the money going to come from to pay for this? How big of a role will the government have to play in the funding of these changes and at what stage? How is the industry currently being funded and how will that change in 5 to 10 years?
