New liaison to the Board of Trustees, Navin Manjooran
The University of Chicago Board of Trustees named Navin J. Manjooran, Executive MBA, of Kochi, India as its graduate liaison for the 2013-2014 academic year. Manjooran is the first student from Booth to be inducted into this position. In this role, Manjooran will serve as a liaison between the university's graduate student population and the board of trustees.
The two student liaisons to the board, Manjooran and an undergraduate representative, are appointed to one-year terms. They each sit on a committee on the university's governing board and serve as non-voting members. In his role, Manjooran will maintain contact with university administrators, including the President's Office, as well as with University of Chicago students.
Manjooran will articulate graduate student concerns and perspectives to the board of trustees, report back to graduate students and serve on task forces and search committees.
"It is my pleasure to serve on the Board of Trustees of this prestigious university," Manjooran said. "The university administrators have been supportive in strengthening the graduate student experience, thereby ensuring that the graduate students are successful." Manjooran is enthusiastic about creating unique opportunities where graduate students can interact with senior administrators. "As a first step towards meeting this goal, I plan on organizing luncheons where students will be able to discuss their perspectives with board members in an informal setting."
Manjooran received his bachelor's degree in engineering from the National Institute of Technology in Warangal, India, where he graduated with Highest Honors. He received his graduate degrees in engineering from University of Florida and Virginia Tech, respectively, also with High Honors.
Manjooran has been a national level tennis player, water-skier and sailor. He was ranked in the top 100 in men's tennis in India. He has always been involved with the Student Government since his school days and has also served on the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The University of Chicago is governed by a 55-member Board of Trustees. The Trustees are responsible for ensuring the capacity of the University to fulfill its mission for current and future generations. Members of the Board play an integral role by providing oversight and input regarding the University's large-scale programmatic goals and its financial and physical resources and by advocating for the university locally, nationally and throughout the world. In addition, Trustees provide financial support, as well as leadership in fundraising, to sustain the University's progress.
