Enjoy Your Time in Chicago

By Liz Oates, '13 and Chris Law, '13  |  june, 2012

To all of the visiting friends and families supporting the graduating class (or second years with unfinished to-do lists), the ChiBus staff wants to thank you for coming. If you have not already had the chance to play the tourist in Chicago, here are some suggestions for your remaining time:

  • Lincoln Park Zoo: world class zoo, free 365 days a year
  • Hancock Building: pro-tip – avoid the line and $10 fee by going to the lounge on the 96th floor for just as good a view
  • Michigan Ave: check out Booth’s Gleacher Center, Millennium Park, “Cloud Gate” (aka the Bean), the Art Institute, and shopping on the Magnificent Mile
  • Second City: Saturday Night Live’s unofficial farm team will not disappoint if you like sketch or improv comedy
  • Chicago Architecture Foundation boat tour: worth every penny to learn a little more background on Chicago’s magnificent skyscrapers
  • Deep dish pizza: Pequod’s, Lou Malnati’s, Giordano’s; everyone claims to have the best, but you can’t go wrong anywhere
  • Hot dogs: Chicago style at Portillo’s (leave the ketchup off!)
  • Live music: class it up at the Lyric Opera and make it a little more downscale with live blues at Kingston Mines
  • Museums: other than the aforementioned, Chicago has some gems. Look into the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park or the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, or Museum of Contemporary Art in particular
  • U of C campus: The University owes its existence to the generosity of legendary businessman John D. Rockefeller. Notable sites are the botany pond, Mansueto Library, Oriental Institute, and Harper Memorial Library
