Joep Konings

Full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Leuven

Joep Konings obtained his PhD in Economics at the London School of Economics and specialized in the field of labor and industrial economics. He is currently economic advisor at the Bureau of Economic Policy Advisors of the European Commission. This unit provides direct input and advice to the president, J.M. Barroso, of the European Commission. Before joining the European Commission, Konings was full professor in economics and dean of the faculty of business and economics at the University of Leuven (K.U.Leuven, Belgium). He is a member of the Institute for Labor Studies (IZA, Bonn) and the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR, London) and held visiting positions at Dartmouth College, the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, the University of Brussels and the International Monetary Fund.

Konings has published over 50 publications in leading academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, The Review of Economics and Statistics, The Journal of International Economics and the Economic Journal. His main field of expertise relates to the effects of globalization on the labor market, including problems of offshoring and outsourcing, empirical trade, the competitiveness of firms and policy evaluation. He recently published two books, one on reforming the labor market in Belgium and one on the Turkish accession process to the European Union.
