Alois Michielsen

Chairman of the Board of Solvay, Member of the Board of Fortis

Mr. Michielson started his career at the Solvay Group in 1969.  His first position was in the Markets Division in Brussels, followed by various missions for the Corporate Secretariat.  From 1977-78, he served as Managing Director of the subsidiaries "Sociedad General de Hules" at Gava and "Gorvi" at Pamplona in Spain.

His next positions included Business Manager for Industrial Sheets at the Central Management Processing in Brussels (1979), General Manager of the Processing Sector (1982), before being appointed a Director and Member of the Executive Committee of Solvay in 1990, Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of Solvay 1994, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Solvay in 1998.

Mr. Michielsen is a Member - or the Chairman - of the Board of numerous Companies within and also outside of the Solvay Group : Member of the Aufsichtsrat of Wienerberger Baustoffindustrie AG, Member of the Board of Directors of CEFIC since 1998, Member of the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) since 1998.

He was made "Chevalier de l'Ordre de Léopold" (Belgium) in 1988.

Mr. Michielsen holds degrees in Civil Engineering and Chemistry and Applied Economic Sciences from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium).  He also served as an assistant at the Faculté des Ecoles Spéciales - Université Catholique de Louvain and at the Institut de Perfectionnement des Dirigeants d'Entreprises - Université Catholique de Louvain.  His PhD studies in Business Administration also brought him to Chicago Booth.
