Khalid A. Mirza
Sector Manager, Financial and Private Sector, East Asia and Pacific Region, The World Bank
Mr. Khalid Mirza is the Sector Manager, Financial and Private Sector Development for the World Bank's East Asia Region. He has more than 35 years of experience in investment banking and development finance.
For fifteen years he worked as an investment banker both in Pakistan and the United Kingdom covering a variety of operational areas in project finance, corporate mergers and acquisitions, securities issuance and trading, and portfolio management.
In 1983 he joined International Finance Corporation (IFC) as an investment officer in its Capital Markets Group and has served as the Regional Capital Markets Manager and IFC's Chief of Mission in Turkey and Thailand. In IFC, he pioneered a number of institution-building projects and provision of technical advice related to the development and regulation of securities markets in several developing countries in different parts of the world including: Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, Egypt, Hungary, India, Jordan, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Zimbabwe.
In March 2000, at the request of the Government of Pakistan he took charge as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan where he initiated and implemented a major program of capital markets and corporate sector reform, including substantive measures to improve corporate governance. Also, he implemented a series of carefully considered steps to enhance the institutional capacity of the Securities Commission and make it an effective regulatory body.
In March 2003, Mr. Mirza was appointed Manager, Financial and Private Sector for the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Region to provide leadership to a newly created financial sector and private sector unit. Mr. Mirza is the focal point for the Bank's program for financial and private sector development within the region including coordinating with other sector groups in the Bank and with external organizations.
