China - The Allure and the Risks: A Stockpicker's Perspective

It seems as though everybody wants a piece of China right now. Foreign direct investment is pouring in, IPOs are hot, Citibank, GM, Siemens, Home Depot, and other blue chip firms have all announced major expansion plans. As a result, investors are pouring money into China-focused mutual funds and rang up an average 63% gain in 2003. While China's growth opportunities are vast, so are the risks of a fledgling stock market, dicey corporate governance, and government officials still learning by trial and error how to deal with a market economy. How does a professional stockpicker size up the allure and the risks? Are China stock mutual funds just another emerging market fund fad? What do you need to consider before making an investment? Eric will set the record straight by explaining why the ride may prove to be rocky for the unwary.
