As political change takes place in different parts of the world, what roles
do the media play in struggles for democracy? Obviously, freedom of the press
is an essential feature of democratic governance, for both philosophical
and pragmatic reasons. But beyond the existence of a free press, what does
an emerging democracy need or get from the media? Do newspapers, radio, even
satellite TV play a role in forging a political community? How is the link
between a political community and its media complicated by the accessibility
of news sources originating outside the community? And what can we in the
US learn from the role played by media in situations of political upheaval?
Plan now to hear one of Chicago's leading commentators on public affairs
tackle this timely topic.
