Mark Gavens, '81, has been named chair of the governing council for the association's metropolitan hospitals section. The nonprofit association has offices in Chicago and Washington DC. Gavens is chief operating officer and senior vice president for clinical care services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.

Scott Donaldson, '07, has been promoted to principal from senior associate. The venture capital and growth equity firm is based in Austin, Texas.
American Chamber of Commerce Ted Dean, '08 (AXP-7), has started work as 2011 chairman of the chamber in China. Headquartered in Beijing, the chamber of commerce is a nonprofit organization representing U.S. companies and individuals doing business in China. Dean is president, managing director, and principal at BDA.

Alumni to Know
Michael Girsch, '03, has been promoted to assistant general manager from director of baseball development at the St. Louis Cardinals major league baseball team. A January 7 article in cardinals.com, a section of MLB.com, cited a news release from the Cardinals that said Girsch has served an important role in player evaluation, scouting, and the creation and development of the team's RedBird Dog 2.0 professional and amateur scouting system that coordinates player video with data and scouting reports.
An online startup that helps small businesses compare credit card processors has raised $1.6 million in a new round of funding. FeeFighters—previously named TransFS—was launched in 2009 by Sean Harper, AB '03, MBA '09, and Joshua Krall, '09, in 2009. The new financing will help FeeFighters expand its products and marketing, said a January 12 article in Chicago Breaking Business.
Corporate confidence has rebounded in a big way, said Sameer Nath, '01, managing director and head of Citi's mergers and acquisitions operations in India, in a January 4 article in VC Circle. Nath said 2010 has been a "record year" for mergers and acquisitions in India, surpassing a previous record of $68 billion in 2007. Outbound areas that are generating interest among Indian companies include natural resources and technology. Inbound areas include health care, consumer goods, and telecommunications, Nath said.
Daniel Posner, '94, has left D.E. Shaw to launch a credit hedge fund at Golub Capital, according to a January 19 article in The Business Insider, which quoted the Financial Times. The article said the Financial Times describes Posner as "well-known in industry circles as an astute distressed debt investor." The article quoted Dealbook as saying that Posner will be looking for "short- and long-term credit investments, as well as opportunities that result from market events."
