The implementation of Affordable Care Act (ACA) means big changes in health insurance benefits, increased cost sharing shifting to patients and consumers in many cases, technology/market innovations, new health care choices and potential business opportunities.
Laura Brege '82, CEO of Nodality, will moderate a panel discussion to help us assess the implications of the Affordable Care Act for consumers and business professionals:
- Jay Harris '76, VP of Business Development at UCSF, will share with us an insider view of the transformation of health care delivery in UCSF as a result of health care reform.
- Dan Morissette '93, Chief Financial Officer of Stanford Health Care, will share with us his assessment of the implications of health care reform on providers, health care delivery, health innovations and infrastructure in particular.
- Dr. David Vlahov, Dean of Nursing at UCSF, will discuss how nurses are taking on new responsibilities to help address the primary care physician shortage created by health care reform.
- Bill DeMarco, President of Pendulum HealthCare and advisor to Center for Medicare Service (CMS), will share his experience building more than a dozen ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations) in this country and in Panama, Costa Rica, and Turkey.
We will have a highly interactive discussion about the migration toward more outpatient care, the formation of ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations), clinical transformation, physician integration, process improvement, and associated changes in IT, infrastructure, and organizational dynamics. We will also assess the value of health care delivery changes and technology innovations from the perspectives of health care providers, health insurance, health IT, investors, employers as well as patients and consumers to help empower stakeholders to take advantage of sweeping market changes.
This seminar will take place on September 18 at the University Club in San Francisco (Nob Hill). We will have cocktails at 6 p.m., with panel discussions from 7 to 9 p.m.
The University Club requires business attire: jeans, sandals, flip-flops are not allowed within the premise. Please follow the dress code when you attend the seminar.

Laura Brege (Moderator) '82
CEO, Nodality
Laura Brege is President and Chief Executive Officer of Nodality, Inc. Ms. Brege has over 25 years of executive management experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and venture capital industries. Nodality is a private life sciences company advancing drug discovery, development and precision medicine by delivering critical and clinically actionable information to bridge gaps left by traditional R&D approaches.
Prior to joining Nodality, Ms. Brege held several senior-level positions at Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., including Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. While at Onyx, she led multiple functions, including commercialization, strategic planning, corporate development, and medical, scientific and government affairs. Onyx was a public biotechnology company discovering, developing and commercializing cancer drugs and was purchased by Amgen in 2013.
Prior to Onyx, Ms. Brege was a General Partner at Red Rock Capital Management, a venture capital firm in Palo Alto specializing in early stage financing for technology companies. Investments were primarily in software and services. Previously Ms. Brege was SVP and Chief Financial Officer at COR Therapeutics, helping build the company from an early stage R&D company through commercial launch of a successful cardiovascular product. Earlier in her career, she served as Chief Financial Officer at Flextronics, Inc. and Treasurer of The Cooper Companies.
Ms. Brege serves on the Board of Directors of several public companies: Acadia Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Aratana Therapeutics, Inc. and Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In addition Ms. Brege is a member of the Board of Directors of BayBio, an industry organization and is Chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees of Ohio University.
Ms. Brege earned her undergraduate degrees in economics and in political science from Ohio University (Honors Tutorial College) and her MBA degree from the University of Chicago.
Jay Harris (Speaker) '76
Vice President of Business Development, UCSF Medical Center
Jay Harris is a Vice President, Business Development, at UCSF Medical Center. Previously he was Chief Strategic Planning Officer at UCSF, with responsibility for marketing, strategic planning and business development. In his current role he is focusing on joint ventures and affiliations.
Mr. Harris' accomplishments at UCSF have included planning and developing an Orthopedic Institute, initiating the affiliation with Children's Hospital - Oakland, organizing a regional Accountable Care Organization initiative, and developing numerous joint ventures with community hospitals.
Prior to joining UCSF in 2005, for eight years Jay was a Vice President at Cain Brothers, a boutique healthcare investment banking firm. At Cain he focused on hospital and medical group financings and acquisitions.
Before Cain, Jay's experience included three CFO roles, six years of investment banking at Smith Barney, and seven years of consulting with Amherst Associates.
Mr. Harris is a 1976 graduate of Chicago Booth, and got his undergraduate degree in Economics. He is proud to have had two Nobel Prize winners (Stigler and Becker) as his professors.
Daniel Morissette (Speaker) '93
Chief Financial Officer, Stanford Health Care
Daniel Morissette is the chief financial officer of Stanford Health Care. He is responsible for strategic, financial and operational matters of the corporation including the institutions $3.5 billion long range financial and capital plan. In addition to his other responsibilities, currently Mr. Morissette is overseeing the executive team on the planning, design and construction of The New Stanford Hospital project and other strategic projects. Since 2007 Stanford has received six credit rating upgrades and earned many national awards for quality and technology innovation.
Prior to joining Stanford, Mr. Morissette was senior vice president, finance and strategy at University of Toledo Medical Center and University of Toledo where he helped lead a turnaround of the health system and subsequently a successful growth strategy including a historic merger and business combination. There he was part of the four person central team guiding overall strategy and implementation for the institution. His previous healthcare and executive experience includes senior vice president at Chicago Medical School and service at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Mr. Morissette earned a M.B.A. from University of Chicago Booth School of Business, a bachelor's degree from DePaul University and is a Certified Public Accountant. He has numerous professional affiliations including University HealthSystem Consortium, ACHE and HFMA. Mr. Morissette lectures in healthcare at Stanford, has taught numerous graduate level courses, and has made numerous professional presentations.
Dr. David Vlahor (Speaker)
Dean of Nursing, UCSF
Dr. Vlahov is Dean and Professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing. He has served on the faculty as Professor of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins and Columbia Universities. He has research expertise in epidemiology, infectious diseases, substance abuse and mental health.
Dr. Vlahov has led epidemiologic studies in Harlem and the Bronx, which have contributed much information on racial/ethnic disparities in health and approaches to address such disparities. Dr. Vlahov initiated and served as the first President of the International Society for Urban Health (www.isuh.org). He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Urban Health, has edited three books on urban health and published over 600 scholarly papers.
Dr. Vlahov has a PhD in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. In 2012 he was invited by the National Department of Health and Human Services to serve on the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice. In 2013 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
Bill Demarco (Speaker)
President, Pendulum HealthCare
Bill has over 40 years of experience in community health plan development and management, reimbursement planning, health analytics, and performance based contract management. He is an expert in helping providers achieve quality driven outcomes and influence health insurance plans to support these efforts.
Mr. DeMarco has helped built more than a dozen Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) in this country and in Panama, Costa Rica, and Turkey. He also serves as an advisor to Center for Medicare Services (CMS) regarding ACO rules.
Mr. DeMarco has taught classes at University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Loyola University Law School, and DePaul University MBA Program. He has published several books on physician driven health plans and performance based medicine. He has an undergraduate degree in Behavioral Science from Hamline University and an Master's degree in Organizational Development from DePaul University.
