Virginia M. Rometty, CEO of IBM, said predictive analytics will supplant gut instinct and experience as the basis for major decisions in businesses, while social software will become the "new production line" to create value. IBMs strategy is helping other organizations succeed by leveraging data using IBMs knowhow and tools. Data, she says, may be a natural resource, but how you use it will determine whether you win or lose.

Several companies compete with IBM in different aspects of the Big Data market. Big Data has its pluses and its minuses, as Target's former CEO experienced with being cheered and then vilified for the company's data gathering practices and analysis. We will take a look at some of the companies who are building significant businesses in this space in an effort to understand the challenges and issues facing companies seeking to hold advantage with little or no experience with high powered analytics.
