DUAL: Dinner Discussion & Networking Evening with Prof. Edwin L. Thomas of MIT
January 24, 2008: 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Institute of Soldier Nanotechnologies - Moving Technology from the Lab to the Field
The MIT Club of Singapore, in partnership with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)/Exploit Technologies, invites you to a dinner talk and discussion with Prof. Edwin L. (Ned) Thomas, the Founding Director of MIT’s Institute of Soldier Nanotechnology (ISN) and Department Head of Material Science and Engineering. Prof. Thomas will trace the cutting-edge research at the ISN since its founding, and focus on the successful applications of the technology in military operations as well as other commercial applications.

The ISN (http://web.mit.edu/isn/index.html) is an interdepartmental research center founded in 2002 by a $50 million, five-year contract with the U.S. Army Research Office. Now in its second five-year contract, the mission of the ISN is straightforward - develop and exploit nanotechnology to dramatically improve the survivability of Soldiers. The ultimate goal is to help the Army create a 21st century battlesuit that combines high-tech capabilities with light weight and comfort. Imagine a bullet-resistant jumpsuit, no thicker than ordinary spandex, that monitors health, eases injuries, communicates automatically, and reacts instantly to chemical and biological agents. It is a long-range vision for how fundamental nanoscience can make Soldiers less vulnerable to enemy and environmental threats.
$15 - MITCS member/member's spouse & MIT staff; $20 - DUAL member; $30 - Others (including SMA). Free for A*STAR/Exploit Technologies staff
