Our guest speaker for the June 17 Entrepreneurial Roundtable will be John P. Calamos, Sr. He will share with us some of the challenges met and lessons learned during his career.

From stocking clerk at dad's west side Chicago grocery store to earning the Distinguished Flying Cross as an Air Force pilot in Vietnam to founding Calamos Investments LLC in 1977, Calamos' career spans industries and perspectives. Today, Calamos heads the eponymous company, which went public in 2004 and boasts nearly $30 billion under management.

Calamos also will share with us his thoughts on global markets, the mega trend of a consistently growing global middle class, and the rapidly increasing impact of emerging markets.

Speaker Profiles

John P. Calamos, Sr. (Speaker)
Entrepreneur and Investment Strategist

John P. Calamos, Sr., Chief Executive Officer and Global Co-Chief Investment Officer, has pioneered Calamos Investments' strategies and techniques to help manage risk for major institutional and individual investors over the course of more than 35 years. He also leads the Investment Committee alongside Gary D. Black.

As founder of Calamos Asset Management, Inc., his experience includes a successful history of developing research and investment processes and building a team-based approach focused on delivering value-added performance. He has established a record of outperformance across an array of investment strategies ranging from conservative to aggressive.

Mr. Calamos received his B.A. in Economics and an M.B.A. in Finance from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Joining the United States Air Force after graduation, he served as a combat pilot during the Vietnam War and ultimately earned the rank of Major. It was during his time in the Air Force that Mr. Calamos became intrigued by the risk management aspects of convertible bonds.

Mr. Calamos has 43 years of industry experience. He won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® award for the financial services sector, Lake Michigan Area program for 2006, and he is a member of the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago. A frequent speaker at investment seminars and conferences, Mr. Calamos has been often quoted as an authority on risk-managed investment strategies.

He has written two books: Investing in Convertible Securities: Your Complete Guide to the Risks and Rewards, and Convertible Securities: the Latest Instruments, Portfolio Strategies, and Valuation Analysis.
