Event Details

Dr. Sian Beilock, an expert on performance and brain science, will speak about what causes people to "choke" and perform sub-optimally when under pressure. Yes, she really can help you understand how to improve your team’s and your own performance in that presentation to a major client or even on the golf course. Dr. Beilock will explain when staying focused helps ... and when it actually hurts. She will explain the inescapable links between body and mind and the surprising similarities among the ways performers, students, athletes, and business people blunder when the stakes are high. She will examine how attention and memory guide human performance and how experience and brain development interact to create our abilities. Dr. Beilock’s prescriptive guidance shows how to remain cool under pressure and how to find your personal key to performing well when everything is on the line. Dr. Beilock is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Chicago. She received a B.S. in Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego in 1997 and PhDs in both Kinesiology (sport psychology and motor learning) and Psychology (cognitive psychology) from Michigan State University in 2003. These dual degrees reflect Dr. Beilock's interest in examining the cognitive and neural processes governing skill success and failure across different task types, performance environments, and levels of expertise. Copies of Sian Beilock’s book, “Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting It Right When You Have To,” will be available for purchase.
