Candice Klein (Speaker) '97
Attorney, Sidley Austin LLP
Candice L. Kline, MBA'97, is an attorney with Sidley Austin LLP in the corporate bankruptcy and restructuring practice. Candice is also a past director of the UCWBG, and presented well-received UCWBG negotiation programs in 2010 and 2011. She is a JD/MBA with career experiences climbing the ladder in large global financial institutions, running software development and marketing for a start-up as Chief Development Officer, and pursuing a second career in corporate law. She has worked internationally and on a broad range of complex commercial deals and litigation. Her management experience includes small and large global teams in marketing, product development, software, and client solutions.
Candice received her JD magna cum laude from the University of Toledo where she was also the Editor-in-Chief of The University of Toledo Law Review and graduated with High Honors in Economics from Oberlin College. Candice is a steering committee member for the Turnaround Management Association, Chicago/Midwest Chapter and a program director with the Chicago Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society.
Laura Balson (Speaker)
Partner, Golan and Christie
Laura Balson is a partner at the Chicago law firm of Golan & Christie LLP where she practices in the areas of employment law and commercial litigation. Laura represents both employers and individual executives and entrepreneurs and has tried cases in state and federal courts. She frequently analyzes and negotiates employment agreements for her clients and speaks on a wide variety of employment law topics. Laura graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 2005 and received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Bates College in 2001, magna cum laude. Laura and her husband, an independent book publisher, live in Northfield with their two small children.
Laura is a powerful advocate for women's rights generally and for pay equity specifically. She is co-chair of a coalition of women's groups who put on the annual Equal Pay Day event in the Richard J. Daley Center Plaza in downtown Chicago. The event aims to raise awareness of the wage gap. At the 2014 event, Laura was interviewed and appeared in a featured segment of the national broadcast of the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.
