Charles Lipson is Professor of Political Science, specializing in international relations and international political history. He is Co-Director of the Program on International Politics, Economics, and Security (PIPES) and its workshop for graduate students.
Professor Lipson's most recent book on international relations, Reliable Partners: How Democracies Have Made a Separate Peace (2003), explains one of the most striking features in world politics: why democracies do not fight wars against each other. He has also written extensively on international trade, debt, and investment, including a book, Standing Guard: Protecting Foreign Capital in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. His most recent work deals with the problems of forging international order after the Cold War.
Besides his scholarship on international relations, Professor Lipson also writes about education and academic integrity. His book, Doing Honest Work in College: How to Prepare Citations, Avoid Plagiarism, and Achieve Real Academic Success (2nd edition, 2008), is the first book for students to deal comprehensively with these issues. It is now being used at a number of universities. Cite Right (2nd edition, 2011) helps authors attribute materials correctly and How to Write a BA Thesis (2005) helps students research and write their senior thesis.
Lipson is a highly regarded teacher, whose courses are among the most popular on campus. He has won the University of Chicago's Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching,and a similar prize for graduate teaching.
