What's behind the turmoil in the global economy? The price of petroleum has declined sharply, and is less than fifty percent of the price a year ago. The governments of countries that rely on the money from oil exports to finance most of their expenditures--Venezuela, Russia, Nigeria, and the countries in the Middle East--will experience severe adjustment problems. The prices of a large array of industrial raw materials have declined sharply as the growth rate in China has declined--and the prospect is that the growth rate will decline sharply. The slowdown in China has led to sharp declines in the prices of the Canadian dollar, the Australian dollar, the Brazilian real, and the South African rand. The price of the Euro has declined by twenty percent. The presentation will focus on the implications of these developments in various foreign countries on the U.S economy in 2015 and will be presented in the signature manner that has delighted generations of Booth students and alumni.
