Credit Suisse recently released its "Global Annual Wealth Report" suggesting that wealth inequality has been on the rise since 2008, particularly in the developing world. The report states: "This has been the case throughout most of human history, with wealth ownership often equating with land holdings, and wealth more often acquired via inheritance or conquest rather than talent or hard work. However, a combination of factors caused wealth inequality to trend downwards in high income countries during much of the 20th century, suggesting that a new era had emerged. That downward trend now appears to have stalled, and possibly gone into reverse."

Join the Chicago Booth Finance Roundtable for a lively discussion on this widely discussed, complex and controversial topic. Professor Robert H. Topel will talk about the causes of rising inequality and provide an analysis of the various policy proposals by Thomas Piketty and other economists, that are intended to address the issue.

Robert Topel is the Isidore and Gladys J. Brown Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the Chicago Booth School of Business. He conducts research on many areas of economics including labor economics, industrial organization and antitrust, business strategy, health economics, energy economics, national security economics, economic growth, and public policy. He is the founding Co-Director of the Energy Policy Institute at Chicago and the Director of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State.
