Richard Rosengarten, AM'88, PhD'94, will outline the intersections of life and art in the remarkably parallel cases of the writer Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), the artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), and the philosopher Simone Weil (1909-1943). Never before examined together, they display remarkable commonalities. Each was utterly devoted to the theory and practice of her craft and regarded it as affording a unique perspective on the world and meaning; each experienced debilitating illness or injury, with an impending sense of death that lent urgency to both her theory and practice; and each suspected as death approached that her work was incomplete, badly misunderstood, or both. Rosengarten will show how these common elements come into the richest comparative focus via their eclectic, often conflicting, not always acknowledged engagements with Judaism and Catholicism.

Richard Rosengarten (Speaker)
Richard Rosengarten is associate professor of religion and literature at the Divinity School, where he served as dean from 2000 to 2010. His published work includes Henry Fielding and the Narration of Providence: Divine Design and the Incursions of Evil and essays on a range of authors including Jonathan Swift, Paul Ricoeur, William Carlos Williams, and Ralph Ellison.
