Over the past 20 years, the alternatives industry has grown enormously – from $500 billion of AUM in hedge funds in 2000 to over $2 trillion today. Much of this growth has come about as a result of institutional investors – pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and foundations – increasing their allocations to alternative investment strategies. Institutional investors are looking for managers that combine the infrastructure strength, diversified business platform and longevity of traditional asset managers with the specialized skills and flexible mandate of alternatives managers. In this environment, managing an alternative investment firm requires a diverse set of people, expertise and technologies to address the demands of investors and meet the requirements of regulators. Chris Hayward will discuss these dynamics and what it takes to manage an alternative investment firm in 2014.

Christopher Hayward, '92 (Speaker) '92
COO & Managing Partner, Highbridge Capital Management, LLC
Mr. Hayward is a Managing Partner and Chief Operating Officer of Highbridge Capital Management. He is Chairman of the Operating Committee and a member of the Highbridge Executive Committee. Mr. Hayward has management oversight for key functions of the firm including business development, investor relations, finance, operations, legal, compliance, strategy, human resources, and technology. Prior to joining Highbridge in May 2010, Mr. Hayward was Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer for Global Equities Markets at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Prior to this role, Mr. Hayward was Global Finance Director for Merrill Lynch. Earlier senior positions at Merrill Lynch included Global Treasurer and Head of Holding Company Supervision Initiatives as well as leadership roles in Risk Management. Mr. Hayward joined Merrill Lynch in 1997 from Bankers Trust where he held senior positions in Risk Advisory Services and Global Risk Management. He started his career as a digital telecommunications engineer at AT&T Network Systems/Bell Labs. Mr. Hayward is Vice Chairman of the Board and member of the Executive Committee of the New York non-profit organization PENCIL which supports public schools. Mr. Hayward is Board member, Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of the non-profit Westmoreland Sanctuary a nature preserve in Westchester County, New York. Mr. Hayward holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology and an MBA in Finance and Public Policy from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
