Past and Future Emergencies in the State of Pakistan

Since 9/11, Pakistan has been a key focal point in the 'war on terror.' With the recent developments - the state of emergency, the assassination of former Prime Minister Bhutto, and the postponement of parliamentary elections - Pakistan is going through new phases of turmoil and instability. Is Pakistan becoming a failed state? Will the first nuclear-armed Moslem country succumb to fundamentalist ideology? What are the geopolitical, regional, and economic consequences of these developments. Having appeared on Channel 11's 'Chicago Tonight,' Manan Ahmed, a PhD student in South Asian Civilization at The University of Chicago and an American of Pakistani heritage, will share his analysis of this timely topic.

Speaker Profiles

Manan Ahmed (Speaker)
PhD Candidate, South Asian Languages and Civilizations, The University of Chicago

Manan Ahmed is a historian of Islam in South Asia. His interests lie in the formulations of Muslim pasts during the colonial and postcolonial periods, the intellectual history of Islamic revivalism and the modern political history of Pakistan. He has taught history of South Asia at the University of Chicago and at Loyola University and is scheduled to receive his PhD in early 2008. He has recently appeared on Chicago Tonight, Chicago Public Radio's Worldview with Jerome McDonald, and Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! to discuss the current and ongoing crisis in Pakistan.
