As a result of China's one child policy, the conventional wisdom asserts that China will grow old before it gets rich. The reason is that China's large population, once thought to be a source of unlimited and inexpensive workers, is already experiencing labor shortages and rising wage levels despite millions of new university graduates each year who are unemployed. How have demographic developments created these conditions? How has the urbanization of China's population affected or mirrored these developments? Will the rise of a large middle class improve or worsen public finances, the labor market, and China's competitiveness? How are the migrant workers of 2012 different than the ones of 1992 in terms of attitudes, expectations, and priorities?
William Ren, who holds a PhD in labor economics from the University of Minnesota, is a keen observer of China's labor market. Recently returned from a trip to China, he reports his observations and concerns, and recommends policy initiatives. Plan to attend this timely presentation on the implications of population on China's labor market and prosperity.
