The panel will include Timothy Knowles, John Dewey director of the Urban Education Institute; Bernadeia Johnson, superintendent, Minneapolis Public Schools; Valeria Silva, superintendent, Saint Paul Public Schools; Randy Koch, principal, Earle Brown Elementary School, Brooklyn Center.
Facilitated by Sara Ray Stoelinga, senior director of the Urban Education Institute.
The discussion will focus on pressing issues in urban education, critical work under way in the Twin Cities to address these challenges, and what the future can bring.
The panel will draw upon their experiences as leaders in the Twin Cities and nationwide. Topics will include the importance of coherent pathways to promote early literacy, strong parent-community partnerships, data-driven instruction, effective district policies to promote improvement, and promising practices under way in urban areas throughout the nation to improve public schools.
The University of Chicago Urban Education Institute (UEI) and the McKnight Foundation have established a deep partnership to improve early literacy and help build a coherent early childhood through third grade educational pipeline in the Twin Cities. The work is designed to ensure students are reading for understanding by grade three, providing a strong foundation for success in school and life.
