From an American perspective, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the idea that the business community should consider the social consequences of economic and commercial actions when making business decisions. This has taken form as recognition of the obligation to give something back to the society that has made its success possible. As a result, there is a substantial and venerable history of corporate giving to society and in businesses making social investments designed to enhance the welfare of the communities in which they operate.

From a Chinese perspective, CSR is an emerging concept and a work in progress. With only 30 years of quasi-capitalism - known as a socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics – Western conceptions of philanthropy or volunteerism are not considered key values, despite rapid economic growth that catapulted China's economy into the world's second largest in 2010.
What are the legal, cultural, and political issues shaping CSR in China's business community? Shasha Song, a practicing lawyer in China specializing on corporate and financial services, addresses this topic against the backdrop of an ever -growing share of the Chinese economy that is in the hands of private companies and no longer state owned. She received her LL.M. from the Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
