Join Nick Epley as he explores how we assess what other people are thinking. Research shows that our actual ability to interpret what others are thinking is very poor. In this talk, Professor Epley will highlight some of the reasons that we are so inept at reading others’ minds and he will suggest some ways that we may be able to improve.
People care a great deal about others’ thoughts, feelings, motivations, intentions and other internal mental states. People attempt to influence others’ impressions, manage others’ expectations and use beliefs about others’ intentions and motivations when attempting to manage or lead others. Although mind reading is a central feature of nearly all social interaction, people’s actual ability to accurately intuit others’ mental states is surprisingly poor.
Professor Epley will present experimental research documenting people’s ability to intuit others’ thoughts, their miscalibrated beliefs about their own abilities and the systematic biases people make when reading others’ minds that are especially relevant for leadership and management. The barriers that exist to reading others’ minds accurately suggest and research confirms, highlight several common mistakes that you will want to avoid in both your everyday life and in your work life and suggest several strategies to improve your mind-reading ability. Attending this presentation will not turn others’ minds into an open book, but it will make you both a better-informed and more accurate mind reader.
