The president of the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, Brooks argues that the case for free enterprise has been mishandled by conservatives, who have framed the issue as a primarily economic one, inviting accusations of corporate greed. Free enterprise is more than an economic issue, he claims—it is an ethical matter of preserving the values that define us as a nation: individual liberty, equal opportunity, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. Not only economically beneficial, capitalism is a cornerstone of American identity. THE BATTLE outlines how the forces of socialism have resurged in recent years, and how—with control over government, money, and power—they are poised to drastically change not only the American economy, but the fundamentals that shape our culture.
With a foreword by Newt Gingrich, THE BATTLE sets out Brooks’ moral case for free enterprise and details his plan to get America back on track. At once a call to action and a crucial redefinition of the political and cultural chasm that divides our nation, the book sets forth an agenda to protect capitalism and reclaim the moral high ground for conservatives, and anyone who believes in defending the principles that have defined our nation since its inception.
