Speaker Profiles

Howard Marks (Speaker)
Chairman, Oaktree Capital Management

Howard Marks is co-chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, the world's biggest distressed-debt investor. He has been running the firm with Bruce Karsh since they founded it in 1995. He had previously been chief investment officer at TCW (formerly called Trust Company of the West) and prior to that was an analyst in Citicorp. The financiers reshuffled the leadership at their now 20-year-old firm in October 2014, bringing in longtime AIG executive Jay Wintrob as the firm's first CEO. The move is in response to the increased size and complexity of the firm, which has more than doubled assets to $97 billion since 2008. Marks is known for his highly regarded investment memos; the most recent one was called "It's Not Easy." A prolific buyer and seller of high-end properties in recent years, Marks apparently paid nearly $24 million for an 8,800-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion that once belonged to the producer of "The Sonny and Cher Show."
